Australian Tree Fern

Australian Tree Fern (Cyathea cooperi)

Some houseplants command the room, and this fern (not a tree, but tree-like), from Australian forest regions, where they call it “Lacy Treefern,” is definitely one of those. Statuesque, with an unusual trunk made of fiber, its whole effect evokes the dinosaur era. The plant can reach 15ft or more even in a pot. Watching new fronds unfurl is a decided treat.

Light - Enjoys bright filtered indirect light with no direct sun and dappled light outdoors in summer

Temperature - Days: 70-75º F; Night - 65º F

Watering - Water the whole plant from overhead, if possible, using a garden spray. Keep the potting mix evenly moist spring through fall; in winter water when top 1/2” is dry. Raise the humidity around the plant with a pebble tray or humidifier

Feeding - Use a slow-release fertilizer monthly

Potting Mix - All-purpose potting soil with added humus, about 3:1 is ideal

Tips - Can grow quickly. If summering outdoors, make sure to bring the plant inside before night temperatures drop to 50º F
