Bromelliads (“Air Plants”, “Living Vase”)
Bromelliads come in so many types that there’s sure to be one to suit everyone’s tastes. Some have striking, colorful, beautifully marked leaves, and some types form a “vase” where water collects, which in nature is where tropical tree frogs like to live. An added bonus is their showy flowers, although it may take several years before bloom.
Light - Bromelliads enjoy high light with some direct sun, although they appreciate protection around midday; happy outdoors in summer.
Temperature - 60º F or warmer.
Watering - Keep the center cups of vase types filled with rainwater rather than water from the faucet, draining and refilling every other week; allow other types to dry out between watering.
Feeding - Give a light application of fish emulsion [brand] twice monthly in spring and summer, once a month the rest of the year.
Potting Mix - Good in a medium orchid mix in clay pots.
Tips - Bromelliads are subject to sunburn, so be sure to keep them protected from harsh sunlight.
